DBSi Data Centers Achieve Type II SOC 2 and SOC 3 Compliancy.

Bethlehem, PA - (January 26, 2012) - DBSi, a premier provider of data center, cloud computing, disaster recovery, and managed services in the Northeast, announced it has obtained the SysTrust® for Service Organizations Seal , also known as a SOC 3 Report. ParenteBeard, a top ranked U.S. accounting firm and independent member of the of Baker Tilly International network, recently completed a Service Organization Controls (SOC) examination of DBSi’s data centers in accordance with AT 101 standards following The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Trust Services Principles and controls over security and availability.

Previous annual audits for DBSi resulted in traditional SAS 70 Type II reports, now known as a SOC 1 report, which follows the AICPA’s Statement on Standards for Attestation Engagements Number 16 (SSAE 16). The change from SAS 70 to SOC Reports was primarily designed to align with international accounting standards and provide more transparent and appropriate reporting options for service organizations. The new change also provides options for companies like DBSi who require assurance reporting as part of their service offering for their customers. SOC 2 and SOC 3 provide much more stringent audit requirements than the former SAS 70 - with a stronger set of controls and requirements specifically designed around data center service organizations.

“DBSi has hundreds of clients representing multiple and unrelated disciplines, each subject to an array of recommended best-practices, certification entities, and/or regulatory bodies. The successful completion of the SOC 2 and 3 examinations validates our commitment to processes and standards that enable us to maintain the quality and security controls that our clients require. This is especially true for our clients in highly-regulated industries such as healthcare, pharmaceutical, and financial markets”, explains DBSi’s COO, Robert Hicks.

SOC 2 and SOC 3 are welcome standards to the data center industry. The former SAS 70 audits didn’t provide a minimum bar for data centers to achieve; they simply verified that the controls and processes in place were followed. Translation? A data center provider with strong controls could claim the same level of audit as one with weak controls. “SOC 2 addresses the same operational components as the prior SAS 70 audit, but now provides standard benchmarks for comparing data center service providers and allows for a side-by-side, apples-to-apples Report comparison”, says Hicks. “DBSi has always had stringent controls and processes in place; the SysTrust® Seal for SOC 2 and 3 compliancy assures our clients that we meet the highest level of data center standards available today”.

DBSi’s SOC 2 report is available, via DBSi’s Client Portal or upon direct request, to existing DBSi clients and prospective clients who have entered into a Confidentiality and Non-Disclosure Agreement with DBSi. SOC 3 reports provide the same level of assurance about controls as a SOC 2 report, but the report is intended for general release. DBSi’s 2011 SOC 3 audit results are currently available for review on the company’s website.

Bethlehem, PA - (December 21, 2011) - The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), a nationally renowned leader in pediatric medicine, professional education, and children’s health research announced the selection of DBSi TekPark Data Center Facility for its most recent expansion. A customer since 2005, DBSi’s engineering of the TekPark facility and their successful long term business relationship were significant factors in CHOP’s decision.

DBSi’s newest data center facility, DBSi TekPark.

Data Based Systems International, Inc.’s (DBSi) recently completed a multi-million dollar renovation of a former chip manufacturing complex outside of Breinigsville, PA (aka DBSi TekPark). “DBSi’s industry expertise in data center designs with redundant architecture and space engineering have enabled CHOP operations to better align with its strategic objectives. Additionally, DBSi’s data center location offerings have complimented our strategy”, said Bob Bartelt, CHOP’s Chief Technology Officer.

DBSi’s Hosting and Recovery Advanced Technology Center (ATC) at TekPark is a 100,000SF state-of-the-art data center space being commissioned in four phases; CHOP is the first of several clients who have already contracted for additional space within this facility. The third facility more than doubles DBSi’s data center capacity and completes a strategic regional paradigm by joining its other Pennsylvania ATCs in Valley Forge and headquarters complex in Bethlehem. The design allows DBSi clients to create an active-active IT strategy while leveraging the third facility for long term archival storage of mission critical data. DBSi is pleased to announce that they are the only managed hosting / colocation facility with this unique advantage powered by its dark fibre network topology.

BETHLEHEM, PA - May 27, 2011 - Data Based Systems International, Inc. (DBSi) opened its third data center outside of Breinigsville, PA in a well-attended Open House celebration this week (aka DBSi TEKPark). DBSi is a leading provider of managed hosting services, high-end colocation, and workspace recovery in the Mid-Atlantic region. Its newest Hosting and Recovery Advanced Technology Center (ATC) at TEKPark is an impressive 220,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility with over 100,000 square feet available for data center expansion.

The data center is being commissioned in four phases with approximately 50% of TEKPark’s first phase already under contract by several major healthcare and manufacturing clients. Among the first includes St. Luke’s Hospital & Health Network (SLHHN) - a multi-hospital system affiliated with more than 1,200 doctors serving the greater Lehigh Valley. Of the decision to select DBSi TEKPark as their data center hosting provider, Director of Architecture and Engineering for SLHHN, Jeff Stone said, “DBSi offered the best options hands down, across the board”. “Making a data center hosting decision was easy; the challenge was in identifying a viable location that would best secure our investment in systems and health care information and would be capable of scaling into the future”. After touring the facility at the open house event, Stone remarked, “Working closely with their teams over the last several months and now seeing the fruition of all their hard work only further confirms our decision to move forward with DBSi - outstanding!”

Strategically positioned, DBSi’s TEKPark facility was designed to support cost-effective technology solutions for clients who require exceptional support for mission-critical business processing and operations. The data center was designed to meet the ever growing cooling and power requirements of high-density servers and storage along with many innovative green technologies. Fed by multiple electrical substations, it has the capacity to grow to over 100 megawatts.

The company’s third facility expands its regional presence by joining its Valley Forge and Bethlehem sites with dark fiber to support real-time data replication between the sites. This design allows DBSi clients to create an active-active production IT strategy while leveraging a tertiary site for long term archival storage of mission critical data, or a third active site. DBSi’s carrier-neutral network topology extends its three data center ring to major cities including New York City, Philadelphia, and Chicago. This combination of multiple data centers and network paths was strategically designed to provide the highest level of redundancy and resiliency for DBSi clients.

About DBSi

Headquartered in Bethlehem, PA, DBSi operates secure, high performance, highly available data centers in Bethlehem, Valley Forge, and Allentown (Breinigsville), PA. In business for over 30 years, today DBSi serves over 300 customers in an array of industry verticals with strong presence in the healthcare and financial markets. DBSi’s comprehensive data center services include a significant healthcare-centric managed data center practice, managed hosting solutions, cloud computing, and traditional colocation.

Equipment to Upgrade Mission-Critical Data Network

PARIS, June 9th, 2011 - DBSi, the Pennsylvania-based provider of disaster recovery, managed hosting, and data center services, has deployed optical networking equipment from Ekinops to connect its three data centers, maximizing network capacity and availability for their clients’ mission-critical data.

The DBSi network uses DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) equipment from Ekinops to provide numerous data-carrying channels over the fiber linking its existing data centers in Bethlehem and Valley Forge to the newest facility in Breinigsville, Pennsylvania.

Deployment of the 10 gigabit per second Ethernet DWDM equipment via the Ekinops 360 platform is the first phase of a two-phase network upgrade for DBSi. Later this year, the company will use Ekinops DWDM equipment to join the three data centers in a ring configuration network that will deliver the highest levels of network redundancy, reliability, and availability.

Christopher Black, DBSi’s Chief Technology Officer, said that many of the company’s clients - specifically financial services and healthcare organizations - use DBSi for synchronous replication of data and there is zero tolerance for downtime for those types of applications. That is one of the reasons DBSi selected the Ekinops equipment for the upgraded network.

“We were in a position where we had to choose between expanding our existing DWDM ring or buying additional lit services from providers, and the latter was not an economically viable solution for our client’s needs,” Black explained. “We chose the Ekinops solution based on its price and performance as well as its operational manageability.”

The Ekinops equipment was deployed in November, and its performance has been flawless, Black said. In addition, the equipment’s streamlined management interface simplifies operations and enables more DBSi IT staffers to support it.

“Ekinops has put in place a very cost-effective 10 Gbps Ethernet DWDM transport network for DBSi. Thanks to the T-Chip (Transport on a Chip) technology, we are able to deliver industry leading economy, scalability and reliability with the Ekinops 360 platform.” said Rob Adams, Vice President of Global Marketing and Product Line Management for Ekinops.

“This will enable a rapid return on investment as their newest data center helps power further growth in DBSi’s business.”The Ekinops 360 is a carrier-class optical transport solution for metro, regional, and long-haul networks. Thanks to its T-Chip® technology, Ekinops equipment packs its transport intelligence into a highly compact and efficient design, reducing costs, footprint, ongoing power consumption, and manufacturing delivery times to customers.

About Ekinops

Ekinops is a leading designer and supplier of next generation optical transport equipment for service providers and enterprise customers. The Ekinops 360 Dynamic, Multi-Reach Transport System provides DWDM and CWDM on a single platform that addresses Metro, Regional, and Long Haul applications.

BETHLEHEM, PA, June 7, 2010 – DBSi recently recovered AmeriGas, the nation’s largest propane company, serving over 1.3 million customers in nearly 50 states, from a fire at the headquarters of AmeriGas and their parent company, UGI. DBSi provided business continuity work area space, PC’s, telephones, and network connectivity for 160 AmeriGas employees at DBSi’s 125,000 sq. ft. recovery facility in Valley Forge, PA. AmeriGas has a well established and tested business continuity plan which allowed them to quickly notify DBSi and advise their employees where to report for work. Within 24 hours DBSi had all work area positions available allowing AmeriGas to continue critical business processes and maintain communication with customers, suppliers and field operations. “We were fortunate to have DBSi as a partner in our recovery plan. Long hours working side-by-side, clear communication, and a well rehearsed plan made the difference in what could have been a catastrophic situation for our organization”, said AmeriGas CIO, Rick Fabrizio. DBSi COO, Bob Hicks agreed, “AmeriGas achieved such a successful recovery because they consistently tested their plan at our recovery center and knew exactly what to do”.

AmeriGas quickly realized that it was going to be many months until their headquarters building was ready for occupancy. DBSi assisted in finding AmeriGas another office location by tapping its extensive network of business partners; designing the communication network for the new location and working with telecom providers made for a fast and effective implementation. AmeriGas plans to be back into their newly refurbished and upgraded building by September.

DBSi has successfully delivered 99.99998% overall uptime availability for data center facility operations over the past ten (10) years far exceeding the uptime of Tier 4 like facilities (99.99).　 This uptime percentage equates to only 85 minutes of “scheduled and unscheduled” downtime since 1999. A Tier 4 data center would expect 480 minutes of downtime during that same period. The metric includes both operational data center facilities – Bethlehem and Valley Forge and relates to all data centers within these facilities which include three in Bethlehem and seven in Valley Forge.

The longest uninterrupted uptime was 9 years 5 months at Bethlehem. DBSi required scheduled downtime (December 2008) to replace an aging UPS infrastructure. The new replacement UPS infrastructure allows for future upgrades and/or replacements without any downtime. Recently, April 2009, DBSi had an unscheduled generator power transfer failure affecting a new data center room weeks after commissioning. Power was lost for 29 minutes until the problem was identified and power safely restored. The Root Cause Analysis (RCA) found there was a monitoring sensor installed backwards during manufacturing by the switch gear manufacturer that was not identified during the commissioning process and reported a false status. Expanded inspection steps have been added to our best practices during commissioning to avoid this in the future.

This track record does not come by just good designs or chance. Unlike many competitors, DBSi owns and operates its data centers. Why is this important? DBSi can perform upgrades, enhancements and maintenance immediately without having to justify work to a landlord and waiting weeks or months for either approval or disapproval. Extensive Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions guide day-to-day operations along with outstanding facilities support staff.

DBSi has begun the installation of a multi-million dollar comprehensive power and environmental monitoring systems at its data center facilities. Two years in design and development, these systems were design with the goals of real-time end-to-end monitoring of all critical infrastructures, power quality, historical trending and capacity management and aid in preventive maintenance.

Every power and cooling fault point in the facilities will be monitored in real-time and are instantly correlated to provide proactive insight to faults and/or abnormal problems. An intuitive “Single Pane of Glass” will allow DBSi’s Enterprise Operations Centers and Facilities staff to view the power and cooling infrastructures at a level of detail not seen at most data centers. In many cases, equipment is double monitored to verify mechanical data points have not failed and are reporting incorrect data. Built on open system standards, DBSi seamlessly integrate any manufacturer’s equipment and data into the monitoring system. Custom designed, colored and labeled wire will help keep the monitoring wire safe and separate from other networks within the facilities.

Scheduled for completion in early 2010, DBSi will be monitoring, gathering data and analyzing over 19,000 data points at its Valley Forge facility alone.
